Vehicle Fuel Fee Officially Renamed "Road Use, Maintenance and Safety Management Fee"
The familiar Vehicle Fuel Fee has officially become history.
Following amendments to Taiwan's Highway Act, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) has officially renamed the Vehicle Fuel Fee to the Road Use, Maintenance and Safety Management Fee. Beginning with this year's July payment cycle, all payment notices will carry the new name. Vehicle owners are advised that this is simply the new official title for the existing annual fee.
Why Was the Name Changed?
According to the MOTC, the previous name often led people to believe the fee was based on fuel consumption. In reality, the revenue is primarily used to support road maintenance, highway improvements, and traffic safety management.
The new name more accurately reflects the actual purpose of the fee and aligns with the revised Highway Act.
Only the Name Has Changed
The MOTC emphasized that the renaming does not affect the existing payment system. The following remain unchanged:

Payment methods
Fee schedule
Applicable vehicles
Private vehicle owners will continue to receive payment notices each July and should complete payment before the specified deadline.
Electric Vehicles Remain Exempt
Current fee exemptions for electric vehicles remain in effect and have been extended through December 31, 2030. The name change does not affect this policy.
Beware of Fraudulent Messages
As this is the first year using the new fee name, the MOTC reminds vehicle owners to verify payment notifications carefully.
Official text messages are sent using the government short code 111. Drivers should avoid clicking suspicious links or responding to unofficial payment requests.
Pay on Time
Although the name has changed, the fee itself remains the same annual charge required by law. Vehicle owners should complete payment before the due date to avoid late penalties or administrative consequences.
